Electric vehicles are rapidly growing in popularity as the number of different options has increased dramatically over the last couple of years and prices are beginning to move towards parity with internal combustion engine cars. But once all the carbon costs of extracting, processing and manufacturing are taken into account, how much lower is the overall lifetime carbon footprint of an EV compared to and ICE car? And for that matter, what’s the carbon footprint of all the other types of transport we use in modern society?
Running Neural Networks on Meshes of Light
Silicon Photonics represent a quantum leap in technological speed and power efficiency. One major issue when dealing with light is the fact that you’re reading the probabilities of the light waves. You run into quantum mechanics at this level. Light is sensitive to interference of the environment through quantum decoherence. I believe there will be a solution to this problem as our understanding of quantum systems evolves.
Solar Electric Cars: More Fact Than Fiction
A holy grail on par with the nuclear cars of years past, solar electric cars don’t claim to do all their driving powered by the sun, but maybe all the driving you really need.

How Was Video Invented?
I always wanted to know why film looked better than video. Moving electronic images have as long a history but were invented for a different purpose.
Tesla Turbine | The interesting physics behind it
The maverick engineer Nikola Tesla made his contribution in the mechanical engineering field too. Look at one of his favorite inventions — a bladeless turbine, or Tesla Turbine. The Tesla turbine had a simple, unique design, yet it was able to beat the efficiency levels of steam turbines at that time. Normal turbines are complex in design, with blades of complicated geometry and stator parts. Nikola Tesla once said the Tesla turbine is his favorite invention and he even claimed an efficiency level of 97% for this turbine. Let’s start a design journey to understand this interesting piece of technology, and towards the end we will also verify Tesla’s efficiency claim.
How does an Electric Motor work? (DC Motor)
Electric motors can seem very mysterious! How do they use electricity to start rotating? Let’s break it down step by step to understand how it works. Topics covered in this video: circuits, current, magnets, electromagnets, armature, commutator, brushes, stator, and rotor. This video only covers DC motors.
This Artificial Intelligence Just Proved It’s Better Than Humans After Being Observed Doing This
Since the early days of humankind, man has been driven to discover new things and develop new technologies. Just like how the wheel was once a novel concept but is now necessary for one’s daily life, many new technologies will become commonplace and essential in a few years. Recent developments could possibly revolutionise multiple industries. These ground-breaking findings have the potential to change the world.
The Blockchain built for Social Media – DESO
DeSo is a layer-1 blockchain, like Bitcoin or Ethereum, that recently listed on Coinbase, has accumulated over 1.5 million accounts, and just crossed over $1B in volume transacted on-chain. DeSo is backed by Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Social Capital, Coinbase Ventures, and many others (full list on deso.org). Our mission is to decentralize social media the same way Bitcoin and Ethereum are decentralizing the financial system. As a layer-1 blockchain, DeSo can be compared to other blockchains like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche, etc… However, DeSo has several major advantages over these platforms, the largest being that it is designed to power storage-heavy applications (like social applications and marketplaces). To put it in perspective, storing just a 200-character “Tweet” on Ethereum costs ~$80, and costs ~$0.25-$1.00+ on Solana, Avalanche, Polygon, and virtually all other smart contract chains. In contrast, it costs 1/1,000th of a penny on DeSo, which is why breakthrough apps like Diamond, Cloutfeed, Pearl, OpenProsper, NFTz, Entre, Cloutavista, and DAODAO are now possible exclusively on DeSo. DeSo’s Mission Today, social media is even more centralized than the financial industry was prior to the creation of Bitcoin. A handful of private entities effectively control public discourse, and earn monopoly profits off of content that they don’t even create. Society’s answer to financial centralization was not to put Warren Buffett in charge of money, it was to use technology, namely Bitcoin, so we could have nobody in charge. We believe the same type of technology will cause this conclusion to ultimately play out in social. DeSo’s advantages make it capable of breaking this status quo for the first time, and bringing competition and innovation back to social in much the same way Bitcoin and Ethereum have done for our financial system.
The Huge, Weird Batteries of the Future
As the planet gets hotter, engineers are racing to find ways to store energy on a massive scale, clearing the way for a transition to renewable electricity.
NFTs for Authors | The Future of Publishing Self-Publishing
What are NFTs? Are they the future of publishing for authors? We hear from Melinda Johnson for a great overview of how her company is using them to help authors get on the USA Today and Wall Street Journal Best Seller List.
